Major upgrades involve the conversion of sites with passive signage only, to active traffic controls (flashing lights and boom gate) or upgrades of safety improvements to sites with existing active traffic controls.
These sites typically include road and rail intersection integration on a large scale. Major upgrades of this type cost in excess of $400,000.

Komungla (Currawang Road)
Commissioned: 15 September 2006
Total cost: $400,000.
RTA, ARTC, Mulwaree Council and RailCorp’s Level Crossing Unit worked together to deliver major upgrade works at Currawang Road Komungla Level Crossing, on the Orange to Wellington section of the RIC Rail Network.
The existing passive stop signs were upgraded to:
· lights, bells and retro-reflective boom gates, with high intensity (LED) lights and additional warning lights;
· queuing treatment (cross hatching);
· removal of non-frangible material; and
· improved road marking and signage (to comply with AS1742.7).
Clergate (Clergate Road)
Commissioned: 3 December 2006
Total cost: $400,000.
The RTA, ARTC, Orange City Council and RailCorp’s Level Crossing Unit have worked together to deliver the major upgrade to Clergate Road, Clergate.
The existing passive stop signs will be upgraded to:
· lights, bells and retro-reflective boom gates, with high intensity (LED) lights and additional warning lights;
· removal of non-frangible material;
· rail constant warning time technology;
· insulated rail sleepers;
· road works; and
· improved road marking and signage (to comply with AS1742.7).
Garema (Garema Pinnicle Road)
Commissioned: 3 December 2006.
Total cost: $400,000.
The RTA, ARTC, Forbes Shire Council and RailCorp’s Level Crossing Unit have worked together to deliver the major upgrade to Pinnicle Road Garema.
The existing passive stop signs were upgraded to include:
· lights, bells and retro-reflective boom gates, with high intensity (LED) lights and additional warning lights;
· rail signal interlocking alterations;
· removal of non-frangible material; and
· improved road marking and signage (to comply with AS1742.7).
Unanderra (Nolan Street)
Safety treatments of $500,000 were jointly funded by the RTA SIP and RailCorp SIPs.
The existing pedestrian swing gate facility (southern side of Nolan Street) was upgraded in line with DDA and APT to improve pedestrian safety. Work included the installation of emergency exits with magnetic latches, tactile markers, wide pre-cast concrete walkway panels, new footpath approaches and improved fencing.
The existing lights, bells and boom gates were also upgraded with high intensity (LED) flashing lights replaced the incandescent lights; road works including new curb and guttering, guard rail, and drainage works (improving the road approach).
Work to link the operation of the level crossing lights to the traffic lights at the adjacent intersection (Nolan Street and Princess Highway) will reduce the potential for motorists to queue or block the exit of other cars from the level crossing. This work is expected to be completed by end June 2007.
Yanco (MacKellar Road)
Commissioned: 18 October 2006
Total cost: $400,000.
The RTA, ARTC, Leeton Shire Council and RailCorp’s Level Crossing Unit have worked together to deliver major upgrade works at MacKellar Road Yanco Level Crossing on the Country RIC Network.
The upgrade from passive Stop signs to active protection included the following:
· lights, bells & retroflective boom gates, with high intensity (LED) lights;
· associated road works; and
· line marking and signage to AS1742.7.
This project was funded by the National Black Spot Program.
